World Wide Photo Walk: Success!!!

The day has gone and past but the memories of it live on through imagery.

This past Saturday saw 50 total strangers (for the most part) gathering together to explore and photograph downtown London, Ontario as part of the World Wide Photo Walk.  With the largest gathering of people that the London Photo Walk had seen as of yet, participants divided up into two camps and headed North or South in search of what makes London, Ontario a great city.

After two hours of walking, talking and photographing, participants met up at a local restaurant for some food, drinks and more conversations.

All in all the day was an overwhelming success and I think that everyone would agree that things couldn’t have been any better.  But don’t take my word for it, check out what Pat Dryburgh (a first time photo walker) and David Redding (a 3-peat photo walk veteran) had to say about the day and how it unfolded.

Once again we would like to thank all of the local businesses that graciously donated prizes to make this day that much more exciting.  Without Orchestra London, Museum London, Stan C. Reade, Lens Lenders, Mainstreet London, Attic Books, Friday Knight Lights or Novacks we wouldn’t have been able to make this day as much as a success as it was.

If you attended the walk make sure to upload your photos to Flickr (its free to sign up for an account) and add your photos to the London Photowalk Group.  You might also want to tag your photos with lopw, wwpw, skphoto so that people searching can easily find them as well.  Uploading your photos to Flickr has nothing to do with the prizes for the official World Wide Photo Walk (see post below for that information), rather, this is just a way to share your experience from the day with everyone else.

Make sure to keep an eye out here at www.londonphotowalk.ca for more details on out monthly gatherings.  Usually held every month at various locations across the city, the London Photo Walk is a fantastic way to get out and explore the City of London through photography and walking.

  1. Kevin and James:

Thanks very much for helping to organize and co-ordinate the World Wide Photo Walk this past weekend in London. I’ve followed Scott Kelby’s blog for some time and of course knew about the walk that was taking place in many cities. But to have one held in London was great!
My daughter Katherine, and I attended. We are members of MyPhotoClub.com through Stan C. Reade photography and always look for great photo opportunities. The walk pointed out to me that there is much to photograph in our own backyard! The day started off looking like rain, and because of the weather, almost thought of not attending. We put those thoughts out of our minds and are very glad we did.

Thanks again for the great time.

  2. Scott.

I twas great you have both you and your daughter out. I think it was a great day and I certainly had the opportunity to meet more new people.

I like that you pointed out that there is much to photograph in our own backyard; I think this is one of the main gains of participating in the photo walks.

    Cheers

i agree with you both scott, and kevin…what an amazing collection of photographs! several, many of the same building taken in different light, and different angles…wow! things i never saw appeared in photos and i am sure things i saw or captured were missed by others..what a great thing! by the end of the year it would be totally cool to have photographed all the main areas of the city…the heritage areas, the downtown, the blackfriars, i think kevin has suggestioned pioneer village…i would love to do that one in that fall! so many great choices…and all right here…and all celebrating london! thanks again for creating such a great activity and for keeping track of all the details etc…well done james and kevin!

    • Donna, you mentioned at the Photowalk about getting photos at the Garden Walk which took place this weekend. I have a few, and my daughter does as well from homes we viewed. Are you interested in having them sent somewhere?

      Thanks,

      Scott

  4. Kevin, congratulations to everyone who participated in the Photo Walk this year. You folks really managed to capture some exciting images of downtown London! Photographers have an interesting way of showing us the world we see every day through their own unique perspective, via the lens of each individual behind the camera. Thank you for helping us to see the heart of our own city as vibrant, interesting and visually attractive.

I also want to make sure you are aware of an upcoming pair of events that are sure to be popular with local photographers. The Imadon Street Painting Performance Group is presenting two overlapping events starting on Tuesday July 28. The first event, Recreating the Central Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, features nine artists along with 10 or more supporting artists who will help with some of the architectural details. The Sistine Chapel project will be painted on Talbot Street, just north of King, and it runs July 28-August 3. The second event, Expressions in Chalk, is a street painting competition and festival happening Aug. 1-3 on Talbot and Dundas Streets around the John Labatt Centre. Approximately 40 artists will paint their own chalk pastel paintings and compete to win prizes. There will be a family area at Covent Garden Market Square where kids can do some chalk painting and be entertained as well. There will be many opportunities for fun, vibrantly-coloured photos. The event has been popular in past years with photographers of all ages and abilities. We hope to see many people downtown taking photos of these amazing artists and their works! It’s a celebration of our local creative community and we hope to welcome many visitors to these free events.

  5. Donna.

I am still amazed by the photos being published each and every day. As usual I am finding things that I missed while on the walk myself, things that although I didn’t capture I am sure glad other people did.

Pioneer Village would be great and as with other people I have talked to about it we think Fall would be the ideal time.

    Kathy.

Thanks you for the information on those upcoming events. I am sure those who can attend will thoroughly enjoy them, sadly I can’t attend as I will be out of town, second year in a row, :( .

Once again we would like to thank Mainstreet London and the Downtown Business Association for their support with this event, because of this support the day was a complete success.
